What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being right here, right now. It’s harnessing the power of your five senses- sight, taste, smell, touch, and sound- to bring you into present moment awareness.

We live in a fast paced world that values doing, over being. We’re constantly consuming new information on the news, on our phones, on the internet, and even just walking down the street! It’s easier more than ever to become distracted and forget to live in the moment. But mindfulness allows us to slow down, reflect, and bring awareness to what’s happening right in front of us.

Almost any activity can be a mindfulness activity-from a nature walk, to sitting on your couch. The key is that you’re slowing down and really bringing awareness to your five senses.

If you’re ever feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or anxious, mindfulness can help you unwind and relax. It can also improve your mental clarity, improve your focus, and help you feel re-energized.

Why Bring Mindfulness Into Your Home?

Your home is your oasis! It’s where you can sit back and relax after a long day. It’s where you can spend quality time with the people you love the most. Your home is your safe space. It should reflect how you want to feel on the inside.

If you’re home is cluttered or messy, that can affect your mental state. By being more mindful about how your space is arranged and what’s in it, you’re creating a space where you can feel happier and calmer.

Having a more mindful home can also inspire and remind you to live in the moment and appreciate everything that’s right in front of you. Below are five ways to bring more mindfulness into your home!

1. Aromatherapy

Whether it’s a candle, essential oil diffuser, or natural room spray, aromatherapy can be a powerful way to relax and experience the sense of smell in your home. According to Healthline, aromatherapy has been used by humans for thousands of years. Ancient cultures have used plant extracts to create different substances used for treating the mind and body.

Some benefits of aromatherapy are better sleep, less tension in muscles, alleviated headaches, and a stronger immune system. Plus, having a nice-smelling home is something that’ll make you feel good in general!

2. Cozy Fabrics & Textures

In order to experience the sense of touch in your home, fill your home with cozy blankets, pillows, bath robes, slippers, rugs, and towels. These different soft textures make your home feel so much more cozy and inviting.

Personally, I’m always cuddling up in a fluffy, white bath robe, slippers, and blankets! There’s something so calming about feeling cozy fabrics against your skin.

3. A Calming Color Scheme

Having lots of natural light and a calm color scheme can make your home feel more mindful. One thing I’ve done is gotten sheer white curtains to allow more sunlight to come through my windows. Decorating with neutral, light, and bright colors can also be really relaxing. Consider light blues, grays, tans, and white.

Also, having plants and other elements from nature can be a powerful way to create a more mindful space.

4. Decluttering and Being Intentional with your Material Possessions

Mindfulness is all about being aware and intentional. So a great way to bring mindfulness into your home is to declutter! Slowly and mindfully go through your possessions and decide if they are all worth keeping. You could ask yourself questions like, Have I used this item in the past month? Do I love this item? Do I already have an item like it?

Often times, we keep things around that we don’t actually use or need. All of this stuff can pile up and make us feel overwhelmed and cluttered. By going through and bringing awareness to each thing you own, you’re practicing mindfulness and creating a more intentional, relaxing home.

5. Inspirational and Positive Reminders

Having inspiring photos or words hung up in your home is another great way to create a more mindful home. Beautiful reminders, like the photo below, can be the perfect way to create a more calming space. Any time you walk into the room, you’ll be reminded to slow down, breathe, and relax.
