7 Ways to be More Productive & Get More Done in a Day

Do you feel like there’s so much you’d like to do, but you struggle getting it all done? Maybe you get distracted, find it difficult to stay motivated, and just aren’t feeling as accomplished as you’d like to. Do you need to figure out a way to be more productive?

I’m in grad school, and I can totally relate to this! With making time for homework, several side jobs, classes, friends and family, self care and more, it can literally seem impossible. I’m constantly striving to meet deadlines, finish projects, and take good care of myself. The reality is that when you’ve got a busy life, it’s not always possible to get everything done.

Nobody can do it all and some days, it’s just not going to happen.

But with that being said, if you’re struggling with productivity, there are things that can help you! These are all tactics that have worked well for me, and helped me stay on track and get more done each day.

1. Turn off your notifications

I know that when I’m trying to get work done on my laptop, notifications popping up can be a real distraction. In fact, I think being distracted is a huge culprit for being productive! Sometimes when I should be doing something, I end up scrolling on social media instead. Putting away the cell phone and turning off notifications can help resist the temptations.

2. Choose a new location

If it’s homework or some kind of work you need to do, sometimes finding a new location can really help you focus. I love going to a coffee shop or any place other than my apartment. I find that the change of scenery can help me really get focused and make some real progress.

3. Create a to-do list in the morning

Creating a to-do list is one of my favorite ways to feel accomplished. In the morning, create a list of everything you need to get done. As you go through the list, crossing out each thing feels really satisfying. It helps keep me motivated to keep going.

Busy week? You've got this!

4. Start with the easiest thing

Some people suggest starting with the hardest thing, but I prefer starting with the easiest thing on my to-do list. The easiest things are probably going to take less time and once I get to the hardest thing, I’ll be able to fully focus the rest of my energy on it.

5. Take mini breaks

Breaks are critical, especially if you have a full day full of things to do. Take mini mental breaks to eat some healthy food, get some fresh air, stretch, and rest. Set a timer on your phone so you don’t get tempted to take breaks that are too long.

6. Ask for help

If you need to clean your home, can you ask people you live with to help out? If you have homework but are struggling to get it done, is there anyone that would be willing to help you through it? Sometimes asking for help can really help push you along and help you accomplish more in the day.

7. Have a Productive Sunday Routine

I love being productive with healthy habits on Sundays. Having a productive Sunday routine sets my week up to feel organized and successful. When I get a lot done on Sundays, I have less to do during the week which can be really helpful.
