What’s a vision board?

If you’re not sure what a vision board is, it’s a board you create to help you manifest your biggest goals and dreams. Vision boards are typically full of photos and words that represent these dreams of yours. You can include written words, photos, quotes, and any other design elements that you feel represent your vision for the future.

What materials do I need for a vision board?

To create your vision board, you’ll need several items.

1. Poster board

You have a few different options for your poster board depending on the look you’re going for. You could go with a thick piece of poster board paper, a cork bulletin board, or construction paper, to name a few.

Cork Bulletin Board

A cork bulletin board like the one below is perfect if you want a vision board that can be easily changed. You can switch out the photos and words anytime since they are pinned on and not glued.

2. Magazines

You’ll need magazines. If you don’t have old ones laying around your house, you could always head to a doctors or dentists office and ask if they have any old ones they don’t need anymore. That’s what I did and I got a whole stack!

You can always print out photos from the internet too!

3. Drawing Utensils

Consider getting pens, markers, colored pencils, and glitter pens to write out quotes and ideas you have for your future.

Gel Pens

This 24 pack of gel pens are full of bright, glittery colors! 12 are neon colored and the other 12 are regular glitter, so you’ll have lots of options to choose from to decorate your vision board.

Why should I create a vision board?

Creating a vision board is a powerful way to visualize your goals and dreams and manifest them into reality. When we can physically see the things we desire in front of us, it helps us get really clear and specific about what we want.

If you’re familiar with the law of attraction or SMART goals, then you know how important it is to get specific about what we want. The more clear, detailed, and specific our goals are, the easier we can bring them into reality. Often times, our dreams and goals are vague like we want to “get healthier” or we want “a big house”.

If you’re serious about getting the things you want, you need to be as clear as possible. How big should the house be? How many rooms does it have? What does the front yard look like? This is why a vision board is so powerful; you can see the details of all of your goals and dreams.

Visualization is a powerful tool that’s even used by professional athletes and important people like Oprah Winfrey! There is scientific evidence that being able to visualize something helps our brain believe it’s possible.

I have had my vision board hanging up next to my bed for several months now, and it’s been incredible to watch some of those things come into reality. I have a lot of photos of traveling and money on my vision board and I’m absolutely shocked with some of the opportunities that have come into my life recently.

Just the other day, I was told I’d be getting paid a large amount for an internship that I didn’t even think was going to pay me at all! That’s just one example.

How should I create a vision board?

I’ve put together the following 5 step process to show you how to create a vision board that works. Don’t forget to download and print out the free planning worksheet found at the bottom of this page! It’ll make your planning way easier.

Step 1: Determine your categories

In what ways would you like to see your life improve? Maybe you’d like to attract more money into your life or maybe a special relationship. Write down every category you’re considering on the planning worksheet printable. Some ideas I’ve provided for you are health, wealth, happiness, relationships, home, and travel.

Step 2: Write specific goals and dreams

Under each category write down a few goals and dreams. Be as specific as possible. For example, if one of your categories is travel, write down the countries you’d like to travel to. If you aren’t sure on specific countries, you could try and describe your dream travel locations and what you’d love to do there. For example, you might write “Somewhere hot, sunny, and near the ocean. A place where there are palm trees and I can stay in a hotel on the beach and snorkel.”

The more specific your visions are, the better!

Step 3: Start to Create

Gather magazines or print out photos from the internet. I went to a local doctors office and asked if they had any old magazines I could have for a project I was doing. They gladly handed me a stack! As you go through each page, find words and photos that represent the goals and desires you wrote about it.

Cut them out and glue them onto your board in whatever way feels right.

Step 4: Don’t worry about perfection

I wanted to throw this in here, because I think it’s really important. You vision board doesn’t need to be perfect. It’s ok if you’re not artistic and the photos don’t look exactly how you’d like them too. I think it’s really common to feel pressure for your art to look a certain way, but there’s no right or wrong way to do this!

Well, I’m here to tell you to not overthink it! As long as your vision board reflects your goals and dreams, that’s all the matters. I think sometimes we get so caught up in how something looks, that it prevents us from being creative in the first place. It really doesn’t need to look perfect. This is just for you. If you’re someone who struggles with perfectionism, I encourage you to check out my post on 5 Ways to Overcome Perfectionism.

Step 5: Hang it up or come back to it often

A vision board is meant to be looked at! If you create it and then stuff it in a drawer somewhere, it probably isn’t going to be very effective. I have mine hanging next to my bed where I can see it every day. But you could hang yours on your fridge, keep it by your desk, or really put it anywhere you frequently go.

I really hope these 5 steps to how to create a vision board were helpful to you! I’d love to hear how it goes and if you find the vision board worksheet helpful. If you haven’t already, grab your planning worksheet below!
